First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Who are We?

Christian spirituality is a way of life that relates who and what we are to who and what God is as revealed in Jesus Christ and as experienced through the Holy Spirit. We encourage one another in the spiritual disciplines, practices through which we open ourselves to being shaped by God.

Those disciplines include prayer, Bible study, worship, stewardship, service, study of the church’s tradition and hospitality to strangers. Our spiritual development ministries range from teaching children to love Jesus to helping adults live Christ-like lives.

Although each Disciples congregation has its own personality, all have members who care for each other, opportunities to grow and learn, and ways to serve others. As churches grow in true community, members care deeply for one another. But true community also means reaching out to include others—encouraging the growth of a diverse community in which all are welcomed and cared for.

In Disciples congregations, study and fellowship groups offer opportunities to ask honest questions, share opinions and discover ways to deal with life’s difficult issues and to grow in faith. Disciples seek to provide a rich fellowship and sense of community for people of all ages and walks of life.

Thursday Evening Praise & Worship

Fellowship and Fun!

We Believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and is our Messiah, Savior and Lord, that the Bible, especially the New Testament, is our guide for faith and life, and that our commitment is to live our faith, not just talk about it.

We Practice

baptism by immersion, upon confession of faith in Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, and weekly Holy Communion (Lord's Supper), open to all Christians.

Freedom of Belief

As Disciples, we are called together around two essentials of faith: a belief in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior; and the belief that Christians are free to follow their conscience guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study, and prayer; and we are expected to extend that freedom to others.

The chalice symbolizes the central place of communion in worship for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The X-shaped cross of the disciple Andrew is a reminder of the ministry of each person and the importance of evangelism. The red color of the chalice signifies vitality, spirit and sacrifice. The position of the cross is tilted as if it is being carried.  This reminds us of the cross Jesus bore and of Jesus' words in Luke 9:23, "And he said to them all, 'If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me'."

The Lord's Supper

"At the table of the Lord we celebrate with thanksgiving the saving acts and presence of Christ" -- From the Preamble of the Design for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Sharing in the Lord's Supper is at the heart of what members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) do when they gather for worship. Generally each week there will be the singing of hymns, prayers, the reading of scripture, and a sermon. But without the Lord's Supper (or communion, as it is often called), worship would be incomplete. A marked characteristic of Disciples is an emphasis upon the importance of the Lord's Supper as a basic part of weekly worship.
