The children that Mama Tara cares for have either lost both parents or were abandoned. The orphanage was originally housed in a wooden house built on stilts over the lagoon. Recently a concrete block building was built to house the children. One wing houses boys; the other, girls; and Mama Tara sleeps in the breezeway between the two wings. The "new" building still doesn't have electricity or plumbing. Cooking is done on an adobe-type stove. Even without the "comforts" of running water, lights, fans, screens or heat, the children feel the "comfort" of Mama Tara's unconditional love.
